Kenya Giakanja

$17.00$60.00

Giakanja is a coffee cooperative and wet mill, collecting and processing coffee cherry from the smallholder farms in the local surrounds. Their membership numbers 1450 smallholders.

Most of the coffee from these small-lot producers are grown as small family plots alongside family homes, located on the slopes and upper plateau of the Tetu division of Nyeri.

The main harvest months are from October to January and Giakanja Coffee Factory experiences moderate rainfall. Temperatures range from 13 to 24C year round.

The region has deep, fertile well drained red volcanic soils which are ideal for coffee production. Smallholders deliver coffee cherry to the factory, where it is depulped, fermented, washed and soaked. Parchment is then dried slowly on raised tables during which time it is frequently turned and constantly sorted by hand to remove any defects.

This lot is an “AA” grade lot, which means a 17/18 screen size. this is the largest of all the classifications and considered the highest quality classification via the Kenyan export system.
