Janson Family Farms is a multigenerational, family-owned estate in Volcán, Chiriquí, on the slopes of Volcán Barú and Tisingal in Western Panama. Founded by Swedish immigrant Carl Axel Janson in the mid‑20th century as a cattle and dairy operation, the family shifted into coffee in the 1980s after soil studies showed strong potential for high-quality coffee.
In 1990, Carl’s sons officially established Janson Coffee, planting varieties such as Catuai, Caturra, Pacamara and, later, green-tip Geisha across farms like Hacienda Cafetalera and Los Alpes.
The family manages the farms with a strong environmental focus, combining coffee plots with about 200 hectares of private nature reserve and wetlands, using practices like enzyme-based fertilisation, and avoiding herbicides and pesticides. Today, first, second, and third Janson generations run the operation, producing top tier specialty coffee while preserving the land and improving the livelihoods of workers and their families
