Our training team are leaders in the Specialty Coffee industry. Our classes are hands-on, and our main goal is to ensure you maximise your experience. We have courses for those looking for an introduction into Specialty Coffee, through to coffee professionals who want to finesse their trade. All courses are limited to a class size of two.

Sessions are run out of Code Black Coffee HQ in our training facility, adjacent to the café and roastery, in Brunswick, Melbourne.

Foundations of Specialty Coffee

2 hours / $280

We recommend everybody start here. In this course, we cover everything you need to know about specialty coffee from cherry to latte. This is suited to beginners, home brewing aficionados, and baristas of all skills levels. 

Learning outcomes include:

  • Understand coffee blends and single origins
  • Learn what makes specialty coffee so special
  • Understand roasting and quality control
  • Brew espresso to a recipe on a modern espresso machine
  • Steam, pour, and split milk 

Workflow, Volumetrics and Latte Art

2 hours / $280

Speed up your puck prep, program volumetrics, and step up your milk game. This course is suited to baristas who have completed the ‘Foundations of Specialty Coffee’ course or have at least 1 year of experience making espresso and pouring lattes in a specialty cafe.

Learning outcomes include:

  • How extraction works
  • How to prepare your espresso puck in less than 20 seconds
  • How to program an espresso machine
  • How to perfect your milk and advance your latte art

Dialling In and Palate Development

2 hours / $270

How do you ensure all of your coffee is tasting delicious? Let's dial in multiple coffees and deep dive into each brewing variable to extract some delicious espresso. This course is suited to Baristas who have completed the ‘Foundation of Specialty Coffee’ course or have at least 1 year of experience making, (and tasting), coffee in a specialty cafe or at home.

Learning outcomes include:

  • How changes to brewing variables impact flavour
  • How to use taste to identify balanced extractions
  • How to create your own brewing recipes
  • How roast profiles impact extraction

Filter Brewing

2 hours / $290

Learn from the 2023 Australian Brewers Cup Champion, Tom Hutchins. Harness the power of each filter brewing variable to create a deliciously sweet and balanced cup of filter coffee for yourself, the cafe, or the competition judges. This course is suited to baristas who have completed the ‘Foundation of Specialty Coffee’ course or have at least 1 year of experience making filter coffee at home or in a cafe.

Learning outcomes include:

  • How to adjust your brews for roast degree
  • How to choose a grind size
  • Learn what variables really matter 
  • Learn what your coffee supposed to taste like
